. . .
The official state flag of
Ohio, called the Ohio burgee,
was adopted in 1902. The flag
was based upon the pennant used
by the Ohio cavalry between
1862 and 1865. This is the only
American state flag that is
not a rectangle. The 13 stars
near the circle represent the
original 13 states in the USA;
the 4 extra stars near the peak
of the triangle symbolize the
fact that Ohio was the 17th
state admitted to the union.
The blue triangle represents
Ohio's hill country. The white
"O" stands for Ohio.
Ohio was the 17th state in
the USA and was admitted in
1803. The capital and also largest
city is Columbus. Ohio is the
easternmost of the North-Central
group of states and is shaped
like a shield. It lies in the
heart of the old industrial
belt. Ohio is bordered by Lake
Erie and Michigan on the north,
Pennsylvania borders on the
northeast and Indiana is to
the west. The Ohio River on
the south and southeast separates
the state from Kentucky and
West Virginia.
Ohio is an unusual state because
it has many urban areas and
seven cities that are larger
than 100,000 which only Texas,
California and Florida have
more. It is a relatively small
state but has one of the highest
populations and ranks #7 in
popilation with close to 11.5
million people living there.
Ohio has a reputation as the
manufacturing powerhouse and
it ranks 3rd among the 50 states
in manufacturing.
Transportation equipment is
the largest manufacturing industry
and more trucks are assembled
in Ohio that any other state.
It produces a lot of electrical
machinery, fabricated metal
products, and nonelectrical
machinery.
Sporting events in Ohio draw
large crowds and there are many
professional sports teams. Some
include: the Cleveland Browns,
Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati
Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland
Cavaliers and many more.
The climate in Ohio is generally
nice and experiences four seasons.
Springs are usually cool and
rainy and summers are generally
warm, with manageable humidity.
Fall days are cool and winters
are cold and snowy, with the
heaviest amounts of snow along
the Lake Erie shoreline. January
is the coldest month, with average
high temperatures in the mid-20s.
July is the warmest month, with
average high temperatures near
80 degrees. Temperature highs
over 90 degrees in summer are
