Nevada's official flag was
adopted on March 26, 1929, but
was revised on June 8, 1991.
The flag has a deep blue background
and shows a yellow flowing ribbon
that reads "BATTLE BORN."
A five-pointed silver star and
the words NEVADA are under the
ribbon. These are surrounded
by green sagebrush with yellow
flowers. Sagebrush is Nevada's
state flower. The silver star
represents the rich mineral
wealth of Nevada, especially
the famous Comstock lode which
was discovered in 1859 and was
one of the largest silver and
gold mines ever found. The words
"Battle Born" on Nevada's
flag allude to fact that Nevada
bacame a state during the Civil
War.
Nevada was the 36th state in
the USA and became a state in
1864. The capital city is Carson
City and largest city is Las
Vegas. Nevada borders Oregon,
Idaho, Utah, Arizona and California.
Nevada is a Rocky Mountain
state and is considered the
most mountainous U.S. state
and has more than 150 individual
mountain ranges. Nevada is characterized
by the high desert Great Basin
in the northern portion of the
state and the low desert in
the southern portion of the
state with mountain ranges in
between.
Nevada is known for being the
marriage and gambling state
and approximately 150 couples
get married in Las Vegas each
day. The luxurious casinos draw
visitors from around the world.
Nevada had the fastest growing
population and one of the fastest
growing economies. Las Vegas
is also the fastest growing
city in the Unites States because
of many activities, bustling
economy and also because of
the property taxes being only
1%. Tourism is the state’s
most important economic activity.
Major tourist attractions are
legalized casino gambling aand
the resort areas of Las Vegas,
Reno, and Lake Tahoe. The Lake
Tahoe region also has a number
of popular ski resorts
Nevada's alpine topography,
central and north, and the desert
conditions of the south are
as different as day and night.
In the southern desert area
summers are extremely hot, dry
and windy. Average summer high
temperature is 90+ degrees.
Winters in the desert are short
and mild, with average highs
in the 50's. In the central
and northern mountain areas,
summers are milder and evenings
cooler. Winter in the central
and northern mountainous area
are much colder and snow , especially
in the high mountains of the
Lake Tahoe area. Annual precipitation
amounts are very low in Nevada,
with less than 10 inches common.
Some higher elevations in the
mountains receive up to 30 inches,
and Lake Tahoe approaches 50
inches
