Louisiana's official flag was
adopted in 1912, one hundred
years after Louisiana became
a state. The flag has a blue
background which symbolizes
truth. It has a white pelican
mother feeding her three chicks
in a nest which is an old symbol
of protection. A white ribbon
bears the state motto, "Union,
Justice, and Confidence".
Louisiana was the 18th state
in the USA and became a state
in 1812. The capital city is
Baton Rouge and largest city
is New Orlenas. Louisiana is
shaped like a letter L and is
bordered by Mississippi on the
east, the Gulf of Mexico on
the south, Texas on the west,
and Arkansas on the north.
Louisiana is the second lowest
place in the country and the
lowest point in Louisiana is
8 feet below sea level in New
Orleans. The mean elevation
of the state of Louisiana is
only 100 feet above sea level.
Louisiana contains more than
6,084 square miles of water
surface. Louisiana is known
for having a rich Cajun culture
which derived from the Acadians
and also many other cultural
influences including the Spanish,
French, German, and American
Indians.
Louisiana has a humid subtropical
climate. The subtropical latitude,
location along the Gulf of Mexico,
the continental landmass to
the north, and the prevailing
southerly winds influence this
type of climate.
Economy consists of Agriculture:
Seafood, cotton, soybeans, cattle,
sugarcane, poultry and eggs,
dairy products, rice.
Industry: Chemical products,
petroleum and coal products,
food processing, transportation
equipment, paper products, tourism.
Louisiana is the largest producer
of oysters in the United States.
Louisiana also leads the nation
in the production of crawfish
with approximately 100 million
pounds of crawfish per year.
