. . .
Kansas' official flag was adopted
in 1927. On a navy blue field
is a sunflower, the state flower
the word "KANSAS,"
and the state seal of Kansas.
The seal pictures rich Kansas
farmland, a farmer plowing,
covered wagons, Native Americans
hunting bison, a rising sun,
a steamboat on water which represents
commerce which is beneath the
sun and the mountains. It has
34 stars because Kansas was
the 34th state in the USA, and
the state motto, "AD ASTRA
PER ASPERA," meaning "To
the stars through difficulty,"
in Latin.
Kansas was admitted to Statehood
on Jan. 29, 1861 as the 34th
state. Kansas lies exactly halfway
between Canada and Mexico and
is the center of the contiguous
48 states. It is a reference
point and all land surveys on
the continent are controlled
from this point. Kansas is bordered
by four states; Oklahoma on
the south, Colorado on the west,
Nebraska on the north, and Missouri
on the east. The capital city
is Topeka and largest city is
Wichita.
Kansas is called the sunflower
state because of so many wild
sunflowers growing on the rolling
plains. It is covered with rich

has a very flat terrain. This
flatland is ideal for growing
wheat and corn which Kansas

is also a national leader in
the sale of cattle and calves
